Horticulture Wales is delighted to announce that a further two crops have been added to its online Crop Calculator.
Following feedback from growers who have used the tool over the past 12 months since being unveiled at last year’s Royal Welsh Show, it has been re-launched with additional information for the following two crops which can be grown commercially here in Wales:
Cut flowers and foliage – included due to the increased popularity of, and demand for, UK-grown cut flowers. Value can also be added by growers producing their own arrangements, drying flowers, and supplying potted plants to sell at local markets, farm shops, or at the farm gate.
Pumpkins and squashes – chosen to help growers capitalise on increasingly popular events such as Hallowe’en. These useful summer crops, with a long post-harvest shelf-life of up to three months, are perfect for farmers’ markets or as fillers for box schemes through into autumn/early winter.
In addition to these two new crops, the calculator allows landowners to quickly and easily evaluate the commercial potential of a cross-section of fruits, vegetables, and herbs suitable for cultivating in Wales, ranging from traditional staples such as leeks and cauliflower, through to niche, high-value alternatives such as asparagus and kale.
